Artists Talk with LVA: December 5, 2024

Lida Gordon: Process and Materials runs December 6 through February 25, 2025 at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts. There will be an opening reception Friday, December 6 from 5 - 7 pm.

Peter Bodnar III is an artist living in Louisville and Vinalhaven, Maine. He was an Assistant Professor at the Louisville School of Art from 1976 to 1983 and has taught at the University of Louisville. He was also a Visiting Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Spalding University. 

John Begley is a Printmaker, Installation, and Video Artist. From 1975 to 2014 he was a Curator and Gallery Director, including 19 years as Executive Director of LVA and several years with the UofL’s Hite Art Institute.

Lida Gordon's drawings and installations deal with archetypical female imagery in a contemporary context. She won many fellowships and awards including the Al Smith Fellowship: Kentucky Arts Council- National Endowment for the Arts in 1993, the Southern Arts Federation - National Endowment for the Arts in 1992, the Kentucky Arts Council Professional Assistance Award Fellowship in 1992, and the Kentucky Foundation for Women Visual Arts Grant in 1988. She was an Assistant Professor at the Louisville School of Art and founded the Fiber Art department at the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute for Art + Design.

Cédric Ballarati believes Photography is about writing with light. His photography depicts the complexities of life. In every picture the intricacies of our planet are unveiled. Even if it looks harder and harder to live with those layers of complexity. 

Cédric studied Architecture at Belgium Liege University and photography at Belgium Liege Art Academy. His work has been exhibited in group and solo shows beginning in  2007 and his first photography book “Terre de chiens” was released in 2019. He is currently living and working in Louisville, Kentucky.

Artists Talk with LVA: November 14, 2024

Britany Baker from Art Sanctuary, Lalana Fedorschak from the Hite MFA, and Ken Wuechter from Atelier Louisville joined us to discuss the 2024 Open Studio Weekend. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Britany Baker attended Xavier University in Cincinnati on full scholarship and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting in 1991. Since then she has worked extensively in scenic design/painting for theater and television, mural painting, illustration and fine art. She has been a designer and creative director for multiple media outlets and ad agencies over the past 25 years. Britany is also currently the creative director for Wingspan Integrating Marketing and the studio manager for Art Sanctuary, a nonprofit arts group with studios in Louisville’s Germantown neighborhood.

Lalana Fedorschak is an artist exploring experiences within individual and social bodies. Working across a range of different materials and techniques, their practice focuses primarily on abstract figurative ceramics, often including metal, wood, textiles, and photography. Lalana’s interests include animal behavior, body horror, practical effects, and queer theory.

Lalana was born and raised in Prescott, Arizona. They hold a BFA in Ceramics from Northern Arizona University and an MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University. Lalana is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Louisville, and formerly held teaching positions at Vincennes University and Indiana University Southeast. Lalana will be at the Hite MFA Building in the Portland neighborhood. 

Ken Wuechter will be at The Atelier Louisville located at 3220 MARION CT. The corner of Marion Ct and S. Bayley in the Crescent Hill neighborhood.

Artists Talk with LVA: November 7, 2024

Dr. Jabani Bennett will be participating in Open Studio Weekend Nov. 16-17 AND opening her solo exhibit, “And say hi to your mother”, at the The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage’s Elmer Lucille Allen Gallery. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each week to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Dr. Jabani Bennett (she/they) served as the first Black woman director of the Women’s Center at the University of Louisville and as a student in 2007 was the student  events coordinator at the center and led one of the few community-wide celebrations for LGBTQIA women on campus.

Dr. Bennett has shaped and provided oversight over numerous creative and inclusive learning and engagement programs for diverse learners across their lifespans. Her career as an award-winning arts educator in New York City and Louisville public schools informs her current projects in social justice, cultural equity planning, and empowering self-identified femmes and feminine-presenting women through the arts.

Artists Talk with LVA: October 31, 2024

Teresa Koester will open 'Gaia's Sentinels" at the LVA Gallery on November 8. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Teresa Koester is a mother,  teaching artist, poet, light kindler, gardener, nature lover and skipper of ghost ships.

She has taught art for all age levels but specializes in adolescent and adult learning. She taught at Louisville Collegiate School, Bellarmine University, at the University of Kentucky. She is a mindfulness meditation practitioner trained in mindfulness education by Mindful Schools and has developed her own curriculum in art practice meditation. The prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards commended Teresa as a National Medalist Educator for four consecutive years 2016-2019 based on the work of her students.

“Gaia’s Sentinels”, an exhibit by Teresa Koester will open at The LVA Gallery on November 8 with a reception from 6-8 pm.
