Artists Talk with LVA: October 19, 2023

Rebecca Norton is doing a lot of things: curator for The Common Gallery & co-founder of MaybeItsFate, a member-owned social club and art gallery in Louisville just to name two. Norton is an artist, curator, and educator. She received her BFA from the University of Louisville in 2004 and her MFA from the Art Center College of Design in 2010. Norton's work is included in permanent collections at 21C Hotel Louisville, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, and the Kentucky Museum at Western Kentucky University. She is the recipient of awards and grants from the Puffin Foundation, 2011, See.me 2013 Painting Category Winner, 2014, M.A. Hadley Fellowship, 2016, the Kentucky Foundation for Women Artist Enrichment Grant, 2019, and the Great Meadows Artist Professional Development Grant, 2019 & 2020. Norton has been a contributing writer for Arts in Bushwick and Abstract Critical. Her lectures and writings have been published on MOCA tv, the Brooklyn Rail, Duke University Scalar publications, and Blacksun Lit. She currently works as an independent curator for The Common Gallery in Louisville Rebecca is co-founder of MaybeItsFate, a member-owned social club and art gallery in Louisville. She lives and works in Kentucky.

As Open Studio begins we speak with 2 of the artists, Ton'nea Green & Victor Sweatt. Also in the studio will be J. Barrett Cooper talking about "The Weir" at Bunbury Theatre. J. Barrett Cooper is an Actor, Director, Fight Director, Dialect & Acting Coach, Former Prod. Dir.-Savage Rose Theatre Co. he has worked with Kentucky Shakespeare, Bunbury Theatre, CenterStage at the Trager JCC, Constellation Stage & Screen in Bloomington, IN, and recently appeared in the feature film White Noise, directed by Noah Baumbach. Currently, he is directing The Weir for Bunbury Theatre, which opens tomorrow and runs through October 28.

Ton’nea Green, a recent recipient of a Black Artists Fund grant, is a talented portrait artist. With this grant, Ton’nea aims to create beautiful paintings that reflect the lived experiences of children during this global pandemic. As a mother, Ton’nea wants this project to capture the complicated emotional experiences that many children have had to go through during this difficult time. Ton’nea will be participating In Open Studio Louisville this Saturday, October 14 at Mellwood Art Center.

Victor Sweatt is a Louisville-based, self-taught painter and muralist. Sweatt was born in Louisville. He has shown his work in both group and solo exhibitions and appears in public and private collections throughout the United States. Sweat is a signature member of Louisville Visual Art, the Kentucky Artist Pastel Society, and the Kentucky Watercolor Society. Victor is participating in Open Studio Louisville at the LVA Studios on October 14 & 21

Artists Talk with LVA: October 5, 2023

Tomisha Lovely-Allen is a self-taught artist from Louisville, KY.  She has been a passionate creator for as long as she can remember. She earned a full scholarship at Northern Kentucky University and graduated with a Bachelor's in Accounting and Associate in Business Administration in 1998 and earned a Certified Public Accountant license in 2002.  

She was chosen to illustrate a historic Kentuckian woman in the “Bluegrass Bold” children’s book project along with 35 other female artists, exhibit at the Arts Center of the Bluegrass Show “The Art of Being Black: Conversations and Experience,” and be grant recipient to the Fund for the Arts '“Black Artist Grant”.

Artists Talk with LVA: September 28, 2023

Marcelle Gianelloni & C.J. Pressma will be exhibiting together at Pyro Gallery as part of the 2023 Louisville Photo Biennial. We will be talking with them in the studio this week. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

C..J. Pressma founded the Center for Photographic Studies – an alternative school of creative photography, in 1970. The Center provided a learning experience for those seeking to explore photography as creative expression. During its eight- year existence the center attracted students from over 35 states and foreign countries to its full-time resident program and provided part-time instruction and darkroom access for hundreds of students in the Louisville metropolitan area. In 1978 he was awarded a National Endowment Fellowship in Photography.

Pressma is also a multimedia producer and marketing communications specialist. In 1984, his seven part series Witness to the Holocaust, was released in the U.S. and Canada where it remains in distribution today. Witness to the Holocaust has received numerous national awards.

Marcelle Gianelloni went to The Chain School, attended Wheaton College, studied Spanish at the Middlebury Language School and received a Masters In Education at Lesley University. She has been the curator of Education at the Louisville Zoo since 1984.

Portland Museum opens the "Made in Portland" exhibition on September 23, which is part of the 2023 Portland Art & Heritage Fair, and 1 of the artists, Noah Howard & Shannon Delahanty, Creative Coordinator at the Museum joined us in the studio to talk about it.
