Open Doors Frayser 5x5 Mask-Making Project Keith Waits · April 23, 2018 Third-grade students at Frayser Elementary enjoyed a mask-making project.Students read and discussed When Turtle Grew Feathers, a Choctaw Native American version of The Tortoise and the Hare. We then used CelluClay, a papier-mache goopy substance, to make the base of their masks.Basing our mask characters on North American animals in the Southeast U.S., we then designed our masks on paper and wrote a short statement about why they chose that animal. Then, to the painting and enhancement of the masks…We used paints, yarns, cut paper, raffia and feathers to add character, interest ferociousness, silliness and accuracy to our painted mask forms.Voila! The masks were sent home to live on the walls of the students’ homes.
