Artists talk with LVA: December 14,2023

Shauntrice Martin is just one artist featured in "Perspectives: 35 African American Artists" at Moremen Gallery. (Kenyatta Bosman, who took this picture at the opening, is another). Shauntrice will be in the studio live this week talking about that, her curatorial efforts, and recent trips to Senegal. Shauntrice is a Black/Choctaw contemporary artist & curator loving in Kentucky. She was the inaugural Speed Art Museum Artist-In-Residence and Louisville Visual Art (LVA) Curatorial Fellow. Shauntrice's museum solo exhibition "Something in the Water" was featured at the Speed Art Museum 2021-22. Most recently, she curated a permanent exhibit entitled "Sweet Fire" with Play Cousins Collective in the Historic Lyles Mall.  Her exhibit at the Muhammad Ali center, We Don’t Wither, featured seven local artists.

"Perspectives 2023" showing December 8 through January 28 is a group show of works by over 30 black artists from Louisville and the surrounding region. Filling the entire gallery space, this exhibition highlights the depth, talent and diversity of the artists’ perspectives. Work includes paintings, sculpture, photography and installations. This exhibit offers a profound exploration of the artists' unique perspectives, their diverse voices, and the impact they have on the art world.​

Louisville Visual Art is proud to announce an upcoming exhibition at LVA Gallery, "A Thousand Words", by Lance G. Newman II. The opening reception is Friday, 5-7 pm, but first Lance will join us in the studio live to talk about his work. Lance G. Newman II has an artistic practice that is varied, multifaceted and interdisciplinary. Twenty years of poetry writing and performing; Ten years of theater and acting; five years of visual artistry; and several published articles. These various forms of expression have all contributed to an artist that is truly a “jack of all trades and master of none, but better than the master of one.” Warmly known as ‘Mr. SpreadLove,’ he seeks to affect the world in a positive way.

Artists Talk with LVA: June 1, 2023

LaNia Roberts has been practicing art professionally for the past 12 years, from selling paintings while being an art student in the LVA Children’s Fine Art Classes program to Syracuse University, continuing studies with mentors in Florence, Italy, and in Louisville with Stan Squirewell.

“...persistently standing firm in my practice post-grad throughout an ongoing pandemic has proven to myself how serious I am to make my uncommon dreams to become a thriving contemporary artist come true.” 

LaNia is the recipient of the 2023 Bill Fischer Award for Visual Art, granted by The Community Foundation of Louisville in partnership with Louisville Visual Art.

Artists Talk with LVA: January 13, 2022

Tad DeSanto is a 75-year-old self-taught artist who has been showing and selling his work since 2005. He has exhibited at the New York City Outsider Art Fair, the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, the Kentucky Folk Art Center, Craft(s) Gallery & Mercantile, Edenside Gallery, Gallery Hertz, Swanson Contemporary, the Good Folk Fest, and other venues. He has also sold work in Dallas, San Francisco, Phoenix, Ann Arbor, Lexington, Georgetown, CT, South Carolina, and Scotland! 

Tia Wells attended Governor’s School for the Arts in high school and graduated from UofL with a double major in Psychology and Fine Art where she studied with Mark Priest. The imagery in her large oil paintings is primarily naturalistic or hyper-realistic but she is beginning to explore digital painting and printmaking.

Desmone Stepp is an artist and the Outreach Coordinator for Louisville Visual Art. She joins us to talk about her work and the new initiatives she is developing at LVA. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear artists talk about their work.

Desmone Stepp is the new Outreach Coordinator for Louisville Visual Arts. She is a recent graduate from the University of Louisville, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Art with a minor in Psychology. Her artwork consists of oil paintings and charcoal drawings that express the beauty of Black women and Mother Nature. Desmone has a background in bringing stress resilience and coping skills to her community in the form of mindfulness and meditation, working 2-years as a Health Advocate Leader for UofL’s Health Promotion Department. In this space, she learned to use art as a means for creating loving and rejuvenating atmospheres for others, as well as herself. As a Health Advocate Leader, Desmone also worked in outreach, organizing and facilitating workshops that connected the campus community. She has also worked as an artist and volunteer with the Healing Walls Project, an organization of BIPOC artists who travel across the United States promoting healing and justice, for those who have been marginalized and oppressed, through the use of public art.
