Artists Talk with LVA: October 24, 2024

Kris Thompson is a fiber artist living and working in Louisville, KY. Recent group exhibitions include an all woman show which she co-curated and exhibited in and a show at Moreman Gallery. In 2024 she had her first solo show at Capacity Contemporary Exchange in Louisville, KY. She is the recipient of a grant from the Great Meadows Foundation in which she traveled to Venice, Italy for the 2024 Venice Biennale. Her work is in private collections in Louisville including the Shapin Nicholas Project Foundation.

Mary Newton is a painter based in Louisville, KY. Recent group exhibitions include H20 at The Painting Center in New York City and 21C Museum Hotel in Louisville, KY. In 2024 she had a one person exhibition at Kleinhelter Gallery in New Albany, IN and in 2022 exhibited at the Suny Art Center in London, UK as a finalist for the Suny Art Prize. She is the recipient of grants from the Caroline Lowndes Foundation, Great Meadows Foundation, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Kentucky Arts Council. In 2023 she was awarded, through the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, a fellowship residency in Salzburg, Austria at the Kunterhaus as part of a cultural exchange with the U.S. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including Wright State University in Dayton, OH, Churchill Downs, Kentucky One Health, Brown Forman, Kosair Children’s Hospital, and Norton Hospital in Louisville.

Artists talk with LVA: December 14,2023

Shauntrice Martin is just one artist featured in "Perspectives: 35 African American Artists" at Moremen Gallery. (Kenyatta Bosman, who took this picture at the opening, is another). Shauntrice will be in the studio live this week talking about that, her curatorial efforts, and recent trips to Senegal. Shauntrice is a Black/Choctaw contemporary artist & curator loving in Kentucky. She was the inaugural Speed Art Museum Artist-In-Residence and Louisville Visual Art (LVA) Curatorial Fellow. Shauntrice's museum solo exhibition "Something in the Water" was featured at the Speed Art Museum 2021-22. Most recently, she curated a permanent exhibit entitled "Sweet Fire" with Play Cousins Collective in the Historic Lyles Mall.  Her exhibit at the Muhammad Ali center, We Don’t Wither, featured seven local artists.

"Perspectives 2023" showing December 8 through January 28 is a group show of works by over 30 black artists from Louisville and the surrounding region. Filling the entire gallery space, this exhibition highlights the depth, talent and diversity of the artists’ perspectives. Work includes paintings, sculpture, photography and installations. This exhibit offers a profound exploration of the artists' unique perspectives, their diverse voices, and the impact they have on the art world.​

Vinhay Keo, born in Cambodia and currently based in Los Angeles, is an interdisciplinary visual artist and researcher. He employs photography, installation, sculpture, performance, and writing as strategies to explore the persistent hauntings of violence. By reading intimately across archives, Keo examines the legacy of the Khmer Rouge Genocide, the Vietnam War, colonialism in Indochina, and queer erasure throughout history and its effects on contemporary diasporic lives.  

Keo earned an MFA in Art from the California Institute of the Arts (2020) and a BFA from the Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University (2016). His work has been exhibited in the U.S. and internationally, He is a recipient of the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship, the Emergency Response Program Award from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), Louisville Visual Art's Rising Star Award, and a Great Meadows Foundation grant. He has participated in various residency programs in the U.S. and abroad, including: Yale at Norfolk (Connecticut), Anderson Ranch Art Center (Colorado), and Tropical Lab (Singapore).

Darrenn E. Canton is an artist from Washington, DC who specializes in fantasy art, childrens' illustration, and cartooning. His work emphasizes humor, wit and character. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Communication Arts, and now resides in Louisville, KY with his dog, Trumpet.

Darrenn and his work will be featured in the LVA Local Muse booth (#332) at St. James Court Art Show, September 30, October 1-2.

Artists Talk With LVA: August 18 2022

Ying Kit Chan is a Chinese American artist who was born in Hong Kong. In the 1970s, he studied art in several colleges in Hong Kong. In 1979, Chan continued his study in the United States and received his BFA from the University of Oklahoma (1981) and MFA from the University of Cincinnati (1983). Between 2003 and 2005, he attended the European Graduate School (Division of Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought) in Saas-Fee (Switzerland) and Paris and has taken seminars with some of the world’s most visionary thinkers including the late Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard.

Chan has presented his artwork in over 200 exhibitions in the United States as well as in Australia, Canada, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Korea, Japan, England, Hong Kong, Poland, Taiwan, and Portugal. He is currently a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Art and Design at the University of Louisville.

Artists Talk with LVA: March 3, 2022

Vian Sora is a first-generation immigrant painter addressing the effects of war and displacement. Sora prides herself in being a self-taught artist, currently working in Louisville, Kentucky, who has received degrees in computer science and an MBA. She studied printmaking under the tutelage of Suleyman Tekcan at the Istanbul Museum of Graphic Arts (IMOGA).

Sora has exhibited in Louisville, Baghdad, Istanbul, and Dubai, including at Dar El Cid Museum, Kuwait, IMOGA, and the Topkapi Palace, Istanbul. Her work has been collected by the Speed Art Museum and KMAC. Her newest work can be seen in"What You Shout Into The Woods Echoes Back" her solo show opening tomorrow at Moremen Gallery and running through April 2, 2022
