Artists talk with LVA: December 21,2023

Clarity Hagan is a writer, director, actor, and generous spirit in the Louisville theatre community. She was live in the studio this week to talk about all of the many projects she is involved in. Tune in to WXOX 97.1/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

In Louisville, Clarity Hagan has worked as a stage manager with Kentucky Shakespeare, a playwright with the Derby City Playwrights, a company member with Looking for Lilith, and as an educator with Drama by George, the Louisville Nature Center, Looking for Lilith Theater Company, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. Their play The Moth and the Masked Man was independently produced in November 2022. They are one of the founding members of three witches shakespeare, a queer, feminist theatre company focused on innovative classical theatre,  and adapted and directed their spring 2023 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

After 30 years of leading Bunbury Theatre, Juergen Tossmann will be passing the torch to Skylar Vest and Hannah Brooks. All 3 talked with us about the importance of transition in the arts. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Juergen Tossmann has been Bunbury's Producing Artistic Director since 1991. Thirty years ago, he guided a struggling fledgling company to health and artistic prominence.

Under Juergen's leadership, Bunbury developed two venues most recently in 2007 the company turned an old gymnasium in The Henry Clay building into a 140-seat state-of-the-art theatre. The theatre currently serves two companies; Bunbury, Pandora Productions, and until very recently,  The Liminal Playhouse.

Before Bunbury, Juergen worked as an artist-in-residence, teacher, actor, freelance director, assistant director, production stage manager, stage manager, prop master, acting coach, and co-founded an improvisational theatre company. The myriad positions at theatres all over the country prepared him for a job that would last over 30 years. At Bunbury Juergen has produced over 200 shows.

In 2020 he received the Kathi EB Ellis Lifetime Achievement Award from Louisville Visual Art. ​

Skylar Vest attended Georgetown College where he earned a BA in Theatre and Directing. Since 2017 he has been working with Bunbury Theatre, most recently as an Artistic Associate.

Hannah Brooks is a local prop and costume designer who has been active in the Louisville theatre community for the last five years. They have worked primarily with Bunbury Theatre on shows including The Green Book, Grace and Glorie, Boatwright, and Visiting Edna. Recently Hannah has been a dresser for the Kentucky Opera and worked for Commonwealth Theatre Company.

Andre Kimo Stone Guess is an internationally respected leader who has over 25 years of executive experience. He previously served as CEO of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh and was VP and Producer for Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. In June 2021 he became the President & CEO of the Louisville Fund for the Arts.

Andre's consulting clients include: The Pew Charitable Trusts, William Penn Foundation, New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, The Clef Club in Philadelphia, Signature Theatre, MCC Theater, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York City Opera, The Esplanade in Singapore, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Aspen Institute, Manhattan Theater Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Workshop, Inc. (Estate of Charles Mingus), Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, Soulful Symphony, Wynton Marsalis Enterprises, Inc. and the Brooklyn Music School. Music management clients include: Christian McBride, Darin Atwater, Sean Jones, Aaron Diehl, Warren Wolf and Nicholas Payton.

Andre received a B.S. in Economics with a minor in Actuarial Mathematics from the University of Louisville. He has finished coursework and completed the comprehensive examinations for a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs with a concentration in Policy Analysis and Evaluation, also at the University of Louisville.  

Andre has served as producer for several recording projects, including one that won a Grammy.  He is also a writer and cultural critic with works published by USA Today, The Courier-Journal, The Root, The Grio and ESPN’s The Undefeated.

Edward “Nardie” White devoted his life to leading the African-American drum corps he co-founded with his wife, Zambia Nkrumah in Louisville, Kentucky three decades ago. Together they inspired youth from their West Louisville neighborhood to thrive by connecting them with the art and cultural traditions of their African ancestors. After leaving this legacy to his successor, Mr. White decided to pursue his lifelong passion for photography.

Mr. White’s first public photography exhibition, Edward “Ed” White - The Historian took place at the Kentucky College of Art + Design. He currently is a part of Through Their Eyes: Future, Present, Past: An LVA Exhibit for Louisville’s Metro Hall October 8 – November 23, 2021
