Artists Talk with LVA: September 7, 2023

The 2023 Louisville Photo Biennial begins this week and Kevin Rose Schultz opens an exhibit at LVA on Sept. 8 while Carol Henry opens her show at Rhonda Goodall Gallery. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com on Thursdays at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Kentuckiana artist Kevin Rose Schultz works out of her studio, created by her husband, in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Schultz’s love of art began early. In her formative years, she spent a lot of time with her grandmother, who was an avid quilter, seamstress, and crafter.  While in grade school, her mother was also beginning her home studies in painting and design. These early family role models made a lasting impression.

She taught visual arts for eighteen years in public high schools and was awarded the Art Educator of the Year Award from the Art Education Association of Indiana in 2014. She retired in 2019 but continues teaching her passion through the LVA Children’s Fine Art Classes and offers workshops locally.

Schultz currently enjoys working in photography and fibers with a focus on cyanotypes and eco-printing.  She has shown her work in national and international juried exhibitions and has works in public and private collections. 

Illuminating the Past opens September 8 at LVA Gallery and runs through November 3

Naturing is a solo exhibition of the photographic kind by Carol Henry that also opens September 8 at The Goodall Gallery

The photo-based artist who spent most of her career in California explores her relationship with nature as a muse, including human nature. A recent resident of the Bluegrass state, she includes several images made with local plant life and our treasured limestone-filtered water.

Photographers Andrew Cenci & Scotty Perry are both exhibiting during the Photo Biennial and we will be talking with them on this week's show. Andrew's work will be at LVA & Scotty at fifteenTWELVE. Tune in to WXO X97.1 FM/Artxfm.com Thursday at 10 am.

Andrew Cenci is a photographic artist based in Louisville, KY. He uses photography to focus on the beauty of the every day through portraits, contemporary landscapes, and candid images. A self-taught photographer, working with traditional practices in order to create bodies of work with poetic sensibility. His photos highlight the beauty, joy, loneliness, and longing of the realities of everyday life. 

A Walk in the Park is available for viewing September 30 through November 7 with an Artist Talk on Saturday, October 9.

Scotty Perry is also a Louisville-based photographer and educator, He is a recipient of a Great Meadows Foundation, Artist Professional Development Grant, and has published the Here Book.

His exhibit, Here, is at fifteen TWELVE now through September 28.

The Louisville Photo Biennial is back and this week we have separate interviews with keynote speaker Keith Carter and Biennial founder Paul Paletti. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM, or stream on Artxfm.com Thursdays at 10 am to hear Keith Waits speak with artists.

Keith Carter is an internationally respected author, educator, and workshop leader. He has published 13 books of his expressive images. In addition, two documentary films have been released: Keith Carter: The Artist Series, Ted Forbes, and A Certain Alchemy, Anthropy Arts. A fifty-year retrospective book was released fall of 2019 from University of Texas Press. Carter has been described as a "Poet of the Ordinary" by the Los Angeles Times (1994) and received the Texas Medal of Arts in 2009. Mr. Carter’s work is included in numerous private and public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the George Eastman House, and the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University.

The 2021 Louisville Photo Biennial takes place from September 9, through November 14, 2021, at locations all throughout Louisville Metro, Southern Indiana, and Central Kentucky.

Paul Paletti is a lawyer and collector of photography who now heads the Louisville Photo Biennial. He attended Middlebury College for 3 years before transferring to the University of New Mexico where he studied with Beaumont Newhall, Van Deren Coke, and Ray Metzker and received a BFA in photography. Paletti earned a MA in photography at Central Washington University in 1975 and his JD at the University of Louisville in 1987. He has been a partner in the law firm of Sturm, Paletti, and Wilson since 1994.

Jenny Zeller is the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s first recipient of a ‘Regional Artist in Residence’ award, part of their Arts in Nature program, which includes residencies for artists from around the world.

On her website, Zeller expresses enthusiasm for the opportunity: “Bernheim is providing me a stipend and temporary living quarters in exchange for a work of art to be left to the Bergheim Foundation. This particular residency is also unique in that I have access to all horticulture and operations departments, as well as ecologists, scientists, naturalists and forest managers. I am also allowed admittance to most scheduled hikes and eco classes offered throughout the calendar year. I have literally been invited to become part of the entire ecosystem at this amazing place and I love how this program enhances the visitor experience through arts interaction.”

Zeller, who is primarily a photographer, spent the month of April at Bernheim, working at Lake Nevins Studio and shooting images for a planned multi-panel photography installation to be installed on the Bergheim grounds. Thursday July 6th, she will be speaking about her experiences at Bernheim at the Wildlands Social Club, an event hosted by Kentucky Natural Lands Trust at 21c Louisville, 6-9pm.

In 2017, Zeller was also awarded an Artist Professional Development Grant from the Great Meadows Foundation. The travel grant allowed her to attend CONTACT, the world’s largest photography festival, held in Toronto Canada each May.

Zeller has also been the Education Coordinator for the Louisville Photo Biennial since 2015, and is currently teaching a class at Zoom Groups' Studio Works in partnership with the Biennial, a 12-week course that will result in a Studio Works exhibition for the Louisville Photo Biennial in October.

The 2017 Louisville Photo Biennial is a regional festival occurring in over 60 venues throughout the Louisville, Lexington, and Southern Indiana area from September 22-November 11. Through exhibits, receptions, workshops and educational opportunities, the Biennial celebrates the medium of photography in all of its richness and variety, and its ability to touch and enrich our lives.

As an exhibiting artist, Zeller’s work will be seen in two 2017 Louisville Photo Biennial. The first, Altered Perceptions, an LVA Photo-Biennial Exhibit at Metro Hall, runs July 17 through January 12, 2018. Some of the images we see here are featured in that show, many shot using an iPhone with a macro lens. Zeller investigates nature as an explorer, introducing her full-size human self into a world of significantly smaller scale, momentarily shrinking her sensibilities to the task.

Then she will have a solo exhibition at Swanson Contemporary entitled Aluminature, which will run September 27th- October 28th, with an Artist’s reception the evening of October 6th, 2017.
