Artists Talk with LVA: December 29, 2022

Dessie Spears, Katherine Corcoran & Mary Burnley are exhibiting together in January as the newest members of Pyro Gallery and we talked to them about their work. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Mary Farnum Burnley is a Louisville native who studied at Murray State University, the University of Louisville, and the Rhode Island School of Design. She has exhibited in numerous, solo and group exhibitions. She has taught Art in Jefferson County at the high school level and adult classes through Louisville Visual Art. Burnley has received numerous awards and is included in collections of universities, hospitals, and corporations including the United States government, the Ford motor company and Merrill Lynch. 

Katherine Corcoran is a sculptor who describes herself as a constructivist.  The Russian constructivist movement in the early 20th century was interested in moving away from painting on canvas and trying new ways to make art. She worked designing exhibit space, fabricating custom trophies, and producing books for blind children; 

Dessie Spears is from Corydon, Indiana. Before she retired, she was an equipment operator and operation engineer. She attended Ivy Tech for Commercial Art and began working as an artist for a display company in Louisville Kentucky. At the age of 49 she enrolled in the San Francisco Academy of Art majoring in Interior Design and Architecture

Their exhibit, All in the Process opens on January 6 at Pyro Gallery. There will be an Artists’ Talk on January 15..

Imuzi Ryzoncity Thompson is a self-taught artist who was born in Manchester, Jamaica but is now based in Louisville KY. His exhibit, Birth Of An American Beast, is now on view at The Common Gallery at the 1512 Creative Compound.

Autumn McKay Lindsey is a ceramic artist whose newest exhibit, Return to the Beaten Path,is now on view at The Common Gallery at the 1512 Creative Compound.

Artists Talk with LVA: December 15, 2022

LVA’s The Local Muse will be at the Flea Off Market's Holiday Bazaar at The Henry Clay Building! Saturday, December 17th, & 18th. Featured artist, Katlyn Thompson will have her artworks on display and available for purchase. and we talked with her this week. "The subjects of my work can be whimsical in nature and invite the viewer into a brightly colored, dream-like universe. From turtles nesting in clouds to manta rays swimming in moonbeams, the creatures living in this universe are expanded with each piece I create.

I am also a local graduate of DuPont Manual High school in 2013. I went on to earn an Elementary Education degree. I am now a JCPS Art Teacher passionate about working with Elementary students to cultivate a creative, trauma-informed, and equitable culture for our future artists of Louisville."

Lindsay Frost & Deborah Stratford tell us about their exhibit, "Women Carving" at Kore Gallery. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Lindsay Frost is a wood sculptor affiliated with the Kentucky Guild of Artist and Craftsman, Louisville Artisans Guild, Louisville Visual Art, & Kentucky Crafted/ Kentucky Proud. In 2022 she was selected by LVA to create the 2022 LVA Honors Awards.

Deborah Stratford is a printmaker, specifically, relief printmaking, in which she carves the surface of linoleum or wood.

“I often look around and think for a long time about how my observations tell a story. This I tell with a collection of objects, places, people, and animals printed. My hope is that my work encourages others to look deeper and longer at what surrounds them.” - Deborah Stratford

Artists Talk with LVA: December 1, 2022

Louisville-born filmmaker scientist Peter Byck talks about his new 10-year project about Multi-Paddock grazing called "Roots So Deep You Can See The Devil Down There" which he recently previewed at Speed Cinema. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Peter Byck is a professor of practice at Arizona State University, in both the School of Sustainability and the Cronkite School of Journalism. He is the director, producer and writer of carbon nation. He is currently helping to lead a $10 million research project focused on Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing; collaborating with 20 scientists and 10 ranchers, focused on soil health & soil carbon storage, microbial/bug/bird biodiversity, water cycling and much more. Byck has currently completed a feature-length documentary (in 10 parts) focused on regenerative grazing: www.carboncowboys.org and is in production on a long-form documentary on the AMP grazing research project.
