Looking Up: Heroes for Today at Metro Hall

"Looking Up: Heroes for Today" is the title of the new art show LVA coordinated at Louisville Metro Hall. Artists Brianna Harlan, Ashley Cathey and Zed Saeed are all on display, and anyone visiting Metro Hall can ask to see their pieces through January 11, 2019.

Zed Saeed is an art and documentary photographer currently working with recent refugees and immigrants that have settled in Kentucky. In Louisville, he connects with these individuals mostly through the Catholic Charities-Migration and Refugee Services. Saeed believes strongly in the power of photography to create connections and to alter perceptions about people, places and things.

Ashley Cathey is a painter whose creative journey began with performing arts before she was eventually encouraged to develop her visual art talents, which, up until then had been purely for her own personal edification, by exhibiting in Chicago before returning to her native Louisville. She came to prominence when ArtsReach commissioned Cathey to create a series of portraits for their annual Keepers of the Dream celebration at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. In 2016 her work was featured on the cover of LEO Weekly as part of an extensive story on artists of color in Louisville.

Brianna Harlan describes herself as, “a mixed media artist that creates Radically Vulnerable art to invite transformative dialogue. Themes of her work include identity, social/cultural dynamics, intimacy, oppression, and self-suppression. Brianna works primarily with participants, inviting them to share and unpack sensitive topics through questions and actions. The discoveries that come from these mindful investigations shape the concept and inform the work's medium. She creates with people, not just about them, and views the process and resulting work as a tool for a moving experience and constructive conversation.

AC Hotel Installation #2

Artist Steve Heine of Cranium Glass hung his new piece “Honeycomb Clouds” at NuLu's new AC Hotel. LVA helped bring local artists Heine, Ewa Perz and Kate Mattingly to the hotel, where most work will he accessible to guests and the public for 6 months. Steve Heine's installation is permanent.

Details for “Honeycomb Clouds”: 4’-0” x 4’-0” x 4” each, laser-cut steel, maple, LED panel [variable color and a remote wi-fi controller], from his current series of “Cloud Panels”.

It's a wrap! Art [squared] 2018 was a big success, thanks to the hundreds of artists who donated original pieces to support Children's Fine Art Classes; the hundreds of attendees who saw and/or bought pieces; our staff, board members and volunteers who gave their time, energy and hard work; and everyone else who contributed to this essential fundraiser. Let's do it again next April!

LVA joined Mayor Greg Fischer, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith, Metro Public Art Administrator Sarah Lindgren, Metro Parks and a large crowd of friends and supporters at Metro Hall on Monday, January 29.

LVA coordinates exhibitions of local artists at Metro Hall, so on this night all gathered to pay tribute to artists CJ Pressma, Jenny Zeller, and Mitch Eckert. Also saluted were the participants of our summer program Picture Love, a partnership between LVA and Metro Parks that returns this summer!

Mayor Fischer announces steps to explore Louisville’s history and values through public art and monuments

"In an effort to ensure Louisville’s public art and monuments not only tell our history but also showcase our community values, Mayor Greg Fischer today announced steps to establish principles for such works, while creating additional opportunities for artists to explore issues of race, discrimination, xenophobia and values."

Exhibition: Shayne Hull

"Shaynicus Andronicus," a solo exhibit of Shayne Hull Art’s work, will be on view at Louisville Visual Art during the performances of Kentucky Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus that run October 4 – 31, or by appointment through LVA.

When Shayne Hull turns his sardonic eye to public figures, he joins a great tradition of political satirists. Republican Strategist Karl Rove, President Barack Obama, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have all been subjects, and now, partially inspired by the plot of William Shakespeare’s "Titus Andronicus," Hull offers portraits of “Mobin Andronicus, Sr.,” “Eric Andronicus,” and “Donald Andronicus, Jr.,” wickedly funny caricatures that require no pithy caption for their pointed understanding.

Hull studied painting at Texas A&M and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and earned a Master in Art Education from the University of Louisville. His paintings have been shown regionally, nationally and internationally in over 175 exhibits, including 25 solo shows. His work can be found in the public collections of Brown-Forman, 21C Museum and the Kentucky Arts Council.

IUS Veterans for Peace mural

We were honored to witness the unveiling of the Veterans for Peace mural at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, IN, honoring those who have served or are currently serving in our military. Printmaker and IUS Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Susanna Crum and Mariana Grohowski, Assistant Professor of English, led student and local veterans in creating the mural, and LVA was proud to do what we could to help make it happen.

We thank our partners who made this possible, ArtsMatch and the Jennifer Lawrence Arts Fund at the Fund for the Arts, and Center for Neighborhoods, for their continued support, and Veterans for Peace for all that they do.

Bourbon, Bets & Bow Ties at Churchill Downs

Local artists were assembled by Revelry Boutique Gallery to do live bourbon barrel painting at Churchill Downs, and LVA was invited to join in the fun with artists Bri Bowers, Bobby Hinkel, Adam Horton, David Nichols, Wood + Twine and more.

Plein Air Paint Out 2017

LVA held our second annual Plein Air Paint Out from 8am-3pm on Sunday, September 17. It was part of a day of fun at the site of the future Waterfront Botanical Gardens that also featured:

A food truck, adult beverages, crafts, demos, nature activities, and more, including a large flower mandala weed walk, solar power demonstration, free canoe tours, butterfly tent, beekeeping, rainwater demo, raptors, baby goats, face painting, a paper flower workshop, a bonsai display and live music by the Porch Possums. Did we forget anything?!?

Home of the Innocents: Exhibition Celebration

LVA instructor Liz has been working with students at Home of the Innocents on several projects, including various crafts, painting, dreamcatchers and an interpretation of HOTI's iconic mural. We recently joined the students, faculty and employees to celebrate the end of a very successful summer!

Studio 2000 Exhibition and Sale

We were honored to hold our Studio 2000 exhibition and sale with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation last night at Actors Theatre of Louisville's beautiful space.

We are so proud of our young artists! Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, bought pieces and otherwise made it such a great night!

The Future Is Now: Opening Exhibition by KyCad

The Future Is Now: Opening Exhibition by LVA

The Future Is Now's opening was a big happening at a packed 849 Gallery at Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University on July 20!

Event Feature: art[squared] 2017

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Children's Fine Art Classes program at art[squared] this year! 154 pieces sold so far, helping us raise over $30,000! This will allow us to continue to provide scholarships to over 1,000 talented and motivated students each year. We are so grateful for all the artists who participated and donated their time and talent, all the collectors who came out to purchase work, the board members and volunteers who helped everything run smoothly, Cunningham Door & Windows for sponsoring the event, as well as CirqueLouis for an amazing performance! It was such a wonderful evening and we are thankful beyond measure for the support of every one of you!
