On the August 30 LVA's Artebella On The Radio we spoke with three women artists who are opening exhibits on September First Friday: Jacque Parsley, Gayle Cerlan, & Meredith Harber. Tune in each Thursday at 10am to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com to hear Keith Waits talk to local artists.

Frac/tured An abstract introspection by Meredith Harber

McGrath Art Gallery, Bellarmine University, Wyatt Center for the Arts, Norris Place

Frac/tured serves as an abstract expression of the seemingly disjointed sense of self, both individually and as a gathered community. Through fine lines, gestural marks, and bold colors, Meredith Harber creates a chaotic moment on the canvas that intends to capture the viewer and challenges them to make sense of what is before them. While each piece may serve as a playful distraction from one’s surroundings, it is the artist’s intent that one put each thematic motif into context as it relates to them personally and how it ties into the modern world.

Gayle Cerlan has been an active member of the Kentucky arts community through her involvement as the creator and director of the Cityworks exhibition (1997-1998), and as curator of the DinnerWorks exhibition (1994-1997). She has served on the boards of Louisville Visual Art and the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft and has been an Adjunct Professor of Ceramics at Indiana University Southeast, Bellarmine College, and the University of Louisville. She founded Cerlan Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky (1997-2007) and established a fine arts school for all ages, ArtStudio (1997-2014). Cerlan has exhibited her ceramic art nationally and internationally and has won many awards and grants. Her work can be found in numerous public collections.

Jacque Parsley Using the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life, including a myriad of found objects, artifacts, ephemera, and vintage printed matter, I present an iconography that creates a dialogue between the permanent and the transient.

As Kurt Schwitters said, “The waste of the world becomes my art”.

As a child I embroidered, wove potholders, collected charms and played with paperdolls.  The influence of the fond memories have been integrated into my art by means of collage, assemblage and embellishment. Each work reflects a partly told tale, a moment in time that gives a nostalgic visual narrative of memories that have been recycled, and a past that has been reinterpreted.

It's a wrap! Art [squared] 2018 was a big success, thanks to the hundreds of artists who donated original pieces to support Children's Fine Art Classes; the hundreds of attendees who saw and/or bought pieces; our staff, board members and volunteers who gave their time, energy and hard work; and everyone else who contributed to this essential fundraiser. Let's do it again next April!

LVA's Artebella On The Radio 4.12.18

Julia Davis is a painter working in the Portland neighborhood, and Douglas Miller is just finishing up his MFA at U of L, and both are featured artists at the 2018 LVA Art[squared] Benefit for Children's Art Classes. We will be talking with them this Thursday at 10am on LVA's Artebella On The Radio. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM / 

Douglas Miller is a professional artist whose drawings are exhibited regionally and in galleries across the United States. Additionally, Douglas does freelance illustrations as well as private and corporate commissions. His artwork is in the collection of the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, the University of Louisville, the Speed School of Engineering, and numerous private collections. Douglas lives and works in Louisville, Kentucky.

Julie Davis got her BFA from the University of Louisville, now maintains a studio in the Portland neighborhood, and has recently been working a lot with Squallis Puppeteers. She remains dedicated to her studio practice for painting however, and was included in Not Just a Drawing: A Line with Intent in Chicago in March 2018.  Her piece for "Art [Squared]", is called, Look before you leap.

LVA's Artebella On The Radio 4.5.18

Chuck Swanson is an artist, primarily a painter, but he is also one of the pioneer gallerists in Louisville, having opened a gallery on Bardstown Road in 1982 and then in 1998 on East Market Street in what would eventually become the celebrated NuLu neighborhood. For the record, Swanson opened the space near Market and Clay well ahead of the rechristening of the area, so he must be counted as one of the reasons why the once-neglected and depressed environs became a hot spot for redevelopment.

Ewa Perz has paintings on display in Revelry Gallery Boutique, Tim Faulkner’s Gallery, European Splendor, Anne Tower Gallery (Lexington), Art on the Levee (Cincinnati), and Galerie Municipale (France). Her paintings have been featured in galleries in US, as well as Mexico, and France. Perz’s one-person show, Water Strokes, was at Revelry Gallery in November 2017. In May 2018, she will be the first artist to exhibit in the new AC Hotel when it opens in the NuLu neighborhood in Louisville.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Children's Fine Art Classes program at art[squared] this year! 154 pieces sold so far, helping us raise over $30,000! This will allow us to continue to provide scholarships to over 1,000 talented and motivated students each year. We are so grateful for all the artists who participated and donated their time and talent, all the collectors who came out to purchase work, the board members and volunteers who helped everything run smoothly, Cunningham Door & Windows for sponsoring the event, as well as CirqueLouis for an amazing performance! It was such a wonderful evening and we are thankful beyond measure for the support of every one of you!

LVA would like to thank our Art Squared committee for putting together a wonderful art[squared] event. The party for the artists on Friday, April 10 was well attended and everyone had a great time. The food was amazing and the energy in the room was festive and fantastic!

We sold 100 paintings at the Art Squared sale on Saturday, April 11. With a 100% match— bringing in a total revenue of 20,000 for our Children's Fine Art Classes (CFAC) program.
