Artists Talk with LVA: October 24, 2024

Kris Thompson is a fiber artist living and working in Louisville, KY. Recent group exhibitions include an all woman show which she co-curated and exhibited in and a show at Moreman Gallery. In 2024 she had her first solo show at Capacity Contemporary Exchange in Louisville, KY. She is the recipient of a grant from the Great Meadows Foundation in which she traveled to Venice, Italy for the 2024 Venice Biennale. Her work is in private collections in Louisville including the Shapin Nicholas Project Foundation.

Mary Newton is a painter based in Louisville, KY. Recent group exhibitions include H20 at The Painting Center in New York City and 21C Museum Hotel in Louisville, KY. In 2024 she had a one person exhibition at Kleinhelter Gallery in New Albany, IN and in 2022 exhibited at the Suny Art Center in London, UK as a finalist for the Suny Art Prize. She is the recipient of grants from the Caroline Lowndes Foundation, Great Meadows Foundation, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Kentucky Arts Council. In 2023 she was awarded, through the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, a fellowship residency in Salzburg, Austria at the Kunterhaus as part of a cultural exchange with the U.S. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including Wright State University in Dayton, OH, Churchill Downs, Kentucky One Health, Brown Forman, Kosair Children’s Hospital, and Norton Hospital in Louisville.

KMAC Couture is April 13 so this week we had 4 of the designer/artists in the studio with us: Juliet Taylor, Mallory Quisenberry, Edwin Ramirez & Trevor Decuir.

KMAC Couture is a wearable live art runway show presented by KMAC Museum. It is the signature fundraiser for KMAC Museum that provides funding for the Museum's educational programs and exhibitions. This event offers a unique way to experience art and fashion. KMAC Couture features and supports emerging and established artists, costumers, designers, and milliners through the extraordinary presentation of original couture pieces of wearable art and conceptual fashion designs. Juliet Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist working with quilting wearable art. This is her first time with KMAC Couture.

Mallory Quisenberry is a fashion designer the founder of Green Folk Collective which features her “handcrafted slow fashion designs. This is her first time with KMAC Couture.

Edwin Alberto Ramirez is a Multimedia artist, costume designer, DJ, & pro dog trainer.

Trevor Decuir is a queer fiber artist just beginning to display work publicly.

Edwin and Trevor are working together on this KMAC Couture.

Angela Davis was born in Big Rock, Virginia and now works here in Louisville as a Social Worker/Trauma Specialist for Seven County Services. She has also been a teacher and has been a multi-media artist her whole life. This is her first time at Couture as a designer. Last year she modeled Laura Patterson’s design.

This is Rebecca Richards’ second time at KMAC Couture. Originally from Los Angeles, she moved to Louisville from New York City three years ago. For the 2023 Couture, she is collaborating with Stivian Widick

Joey Yates is currently the Curatorial Director at KMAC, where he has worked as a curator since 2012. He earned his Masters in Curatorial Studies at the University of Louisville and worked for Land of Tomorrow and Bellarmine University before joining KMAC.
