LVA's Artebella On The Radio May 23, 2019

Tammy Burke and Helen Payne, from the current UofL/Hite MFA Graduates Exhibition at Cressman Center will be joining KeithWaits in the studio this week to talk about their work. Tammy Burke has a MA in Media Communications, Webster University 2008 and a BFA in Painting Herron School of Art, IUPUI Indianapolis 1997. “Thinging”, solo MFA thesis exhibition, Grow West MFA Studios, Portland neighborhood, April 22 to May 3, 2019.   She mounted an installation concurrent with the run of Eurydice, at the U of L Thrust Theater in January 2018, and participated in the Artlink Regional Exhibition, Artlink Contemporary Gallery, Fort Wayne, IN, January through March of 2018. 

Helen Payne was born on Jamestown, RI and was raised in Appalachia.  She’s studied poetry at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Helen’s paintings and drawings have been shown nationally including Fraser Gallery, Washington, DC, Woman-Made Gallery, Chicago, IL, Bromfield Gallery, Boston, MA, Mobius Gallery, Cambridge, MA and the Holzwaser Gallery. Her work is held in many private collections and Governor Gaston Caperton’s West Virginia Collection.

The Hite Art Institute 2019 MFA Graduates Exhibition. Featuring a selection of works from this year’s graduating MFA student’s thesis exhibitions.

2019 MFA Graduates include Lauren Bader, Reid Broadstreet, Tammy Burke, Helen Payne, Monica Stewart and KCJ Szwedzinski.

The exhibition will run through - August 30, 2019

Sara Cissell will be graduating this upcoming fall 2019 with her BA in Art History and Humanities. Sara has eight years of museum experience formerly working at the Frazier History Museum, and currently the Speed Art Museum. She has interned for the Speed, KMAC, and Sheherazade Gallery. This will be Sara’s first curated show.

Diana Dillman graduated Fall 2018 with her BA in Art History and has interned for the Filson Historical Society and the United States Capitol Visitors Center. Diana currently works at the Kentucky Derby Museum. She has previously curated for the Critical and Curatorial Studies II class with “Caprices: Wit and Whimsy,” which was also at Schneider Hall.

Carrie Donovan is currently the Design manager at The Speed Art Museum. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, she received her BFA in Communication Art & Design from the University of Louisville. 

The Hite Art Institute is pleased to present “Mental Misconceptions: The Art of Self-Care”, an art exhibition that investigates, comments, and validates the correlation between mental health and the healing process otherwise known as “post-trauma growth.” Post-trauma growth refers to those who have experienced a stronger sense of well-being after a traumatic event. This exhibition solely focuses on local artists and their unique interpretations towards their own self-care and the treatment of others.

“Mental Misconceptions: The Art of Self-Care” features eleven local artists including: Megan Bickel, Jeremy Brightbill, Julio Cesar Rodriguez Aguilar, Andrew and Simon Cozzens, Carrie Donovan, Brianna Harlan, Tammy Richardson, KCJ Szwedzinski, and Letitia Quesenberry.

Dr. Catherine Fosl is a Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and founding Director of the Anne Braden Institute. Dr. Fosl was Anne Braden’s biographer and is the author of Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Cold War South (Palgrave Macmillan, 2002), as well as other books.

Carla Wallace is a civil rights activist in Louisville, Ky. She is co-founder of the Fairness Campaignand Showing Up for Racial Justice and a member of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Hall of Fame

Chris Reitz is Assistant Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies and Gallery Director at the Hite Art Institute. His research focuses on transnational practices in art and exhibitions of the past 30 years, with a particular emphasis on art and the art market in the era of neoliberalism.

Jessica Oberdick is a visual artist, curator, and writer. She has contributed to various online platforms including Burnaway and Ruckus Louisville, and was recently published in the international magazine Boshemia. She has curated + co-curated exhibitions at 1619 Flux and KMAC Museum, both in Louisville, and currently is the Exhibitions Assistant for the Hite Institute for Visual Art at the University of Louisville.

Jo Anne Triplett is a contributing arts editor at LEO Weekly. She’s a past member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Public Art, was the content advisor on the Glassworks Building video, and has written for Louisville Magazine, Kentucky Homes and Gardens and the national publication Glass Craftsman. Jo Anne came to Louisville from Washington, D.C. where she worked as a researcher and writer for the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Jessica Oberdick is a visual artist, curator, and writer. In December 2017 Oberdick graduated from the University of Louisville with her dual Master of Arts and Art History in Critical and Curatorial Studies and Master of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management. Mixed Media Artist Ashley Cathey and Photographer Zed Saeed were my guests this week. They are part of Looking Up: Heroes For Today – An LVA Exhibit at Metro Hall. Join us by tuning into WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10am.

Ashley Cathey is a Louisville native whose paintings have brought her to prominence in a fairly short time after moving back to Louisville from Chicago. When she returned, she quickly found her footing and exhibited work in a group show at the Louisville Community Center, one of the Metro Parks community centers overseen by Portia White. From there, Cathey caught the attention of ArtsReach’s Julia Youngblood, who commissioned Cathey to create a series of portraits, which ArtsReach used for posters for their annual Keepers of the Dream celebration at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Zed Saeed is an art and documentary photographer currently working with recent refugees and immigrants that have settled in Kentucky. In Louisville, he connects with these individuals mostly through the Catholic Charities-Migration and Refugee Services. Saeed believes strongly in the power of photography to create connections and to alter perceptions about people, places and things.

Julia Davis is a painter working in the Portland neighborhood, and Douglas Miller is just finishing up his MFA at U of L, and both are featured artists at the 2018 LVA Art[squared] Benefit for Children's Art Classes. Douglas Miller is a professional artist whose drawings are exhibited regionally and in galleries across the United States. Additionally, Douglas does freelance illustrations as well as private and corporate commissions. His artwork is in the collection of the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, the University of Louisville, the Speed School of Engineering, and numerous private collections. Douglas lives and works in Louisville, Kentucky.

Julie Davis got her BFA from the University of Louisville, now maintains a studio in the Portland neighborhood, and has recently been working a lot with Squallis Puppeteers. She remains dedicated to her studio practice for painting however, and was included in Not Just a Drawing: A Line with Intent in Chicago in March 2018.  Her piece for "Art [Squared]", is called, Look before you leap.
