"Extreme Prints: Printmaking at the Edge", an invitational exhibit curated by Debby Stratford & John Begley opens at Kore Gallery December 7. They joined us this week and brought two of the participating artists, Tatiana Ryckman & Susanna Crum and gallery owner Don Cartwright. Tatiana Ryckman was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lives in Austin, Texas. She is also the author of two chapbooks of short prose, Twenty-Something and VHS and Why It's Hard to Live. Tatiana's work has appeared on Tin House's The Open Bar, Barrelhouse, Opossum Lit, The Establishment, Nonbinary Review, Flavorwire, and many other publications. Tatiana has been an artist in residence at Yaddo and Arthub, and she is the editor of Awst Press and Assistant Editor at sunnyoutside press.

Susanna Crum’s work has been featured in several international and national exhibitions, she returned to her hometown of Louisville to start the city’s first shared printmaking workspace, Calliope Arts Printmaking Studio & Gallery, with fellow artist and partner Rodolfo Salgado. Since 2015, she has taught printmaking as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University Southeast, New Albany, IN. From 2018-2020, she is serving as President of the Mid America Print Council.

Debby Stratford is an artist and printmaker living in Louisville, KY. She spent many years teaching art to public school students in Louisville, and is now printing full-time in her studio in the Hope Mills Building..

John Begley is currently a Freelance art worker (artist, curator, art services provider). Previously he was Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art (Emeritus), Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate program coordinator at the Allen R. Hite Art Institute, University of Louisville, Director, Louisville Visual Art, Director, and was founding director New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, New Harmony, IN. He is now the co-founder with Peter Morrin of AFLOAT: AN OHIO RIVER WAY OF LIFE. 

Since 2012 Don Cartwright has owned and managed KORE Gallery, which is now located at 942 East Kentucky. KORE hosts "invitational" shows along with solo and multiple artists shows. This new gallery location offers 4500 square feet of exhibit space.

Rita M. Cameron was born in Louisville KY. She was educated at MSU in Morehead KY (started out as printmaker then turned to painting). From 1994-1998 she maintained a studio on Billy Goat Strut Alley- an old warehouse with no plumbing or heat since 2013 she has worked out of her studio space at Art Sanctuary.

Bryan K. Holden was born in Louisville, Kentucky and has lived and worked there his entire life. Holden studied under the guidance and influence of his father, where he learned about conceptual thought, creativity, intricacy and superior craftsmanship. He continues his studies to this day, on his own.

His work is continuously evolving and refining and has changed monumentally since 2012, when he started his Deconstruction series of work. Stretched across a vast range of media, Holden creates contemporary, inventive and complex two and three-dimensional conceptual work. His Deconstruction series of work serves as the foundation for an ongoing investigation of human behavior and how it affects people and those around them. Often using repurposed, common and uncommon collected materials related to the particular behavior he is addressing.

Holden’s works are in the public collections of Humana Health Care, Brown-Forman Corporation, The Helen Keller Foundation, The City of Louisville, National Public Radio, The University of Louisville and many others. Also, Bryan’s work can be found in private collections throughout the United States, as well as in Dubai, Germany, Italy, Canada, Sweden and the UK.

Elizabeth Foley earned a BFA in graphic design from Washington University in St Louis and an MFA in printmaking and M.Ed in secondary education from Ohio University. As a new resident of Louisville, she is pursuing art full- time. While developing her art practice, she taught art; five years at Wyoming Middle School in Wyoming, Ohio and fifteen years as the Upper School 3D Art Teacher at Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky. She is a founding member of the Bluegrass Printmakers’ Cooperative in Lexington and was Executive Director for ten years. She is a member of the Kentucky Crafted Program and is a cohort in the 2017-18 Hadley Creatives Program.

Developed in partnership with Creative Capital, a New York-based nonprofit that supports innovative and adventurous artists across the country, Hadley Creatives is a 6-month learning and engagement experience for local artists who are at a pivotal point in their careers.  Through a competitive application process, we selected fifteen artists who demonstrated a strong creative vision and a readiness to pursue or extend their career as a working artist. The six-month program will help the selected local artists build their professional practice, cultivate an expanded peer network and dedicate time for reflection and planning.

The 5th Annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art

The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, presented Louisville-based artist and printmaker Adrienne Miller with the fifth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art today at 10 a.m.

The $5,000 award is an opportunity for local artists to enhance their careers through a targeted enrichment experience. Miller will use the prize to research the landscape and art historical influence of the Four Corners area of the American Southwest. The two-week trip will cover close to 2,000 miles in a loop through the Four Corners region and will include a variety of stops, including several different pueblo ruin sites, printmaking studios in Albuquerque, the Georgia O’Keefe museum and archives, several National Parks, energy vortexes in Sedona, and several large earthworks in the region.

“I want the experience to be transformative and immersive so that I come away feeling as though the experience really was a tipping point for me,” said Miller of the Hadley Prize enrichment experience. “I want to return to Louisville renewed to create a whole new body of work.”

“The selection committee was very impressed with Adrienne’s clear artistic vision and the unique nature of her enrichment experience,” said LVA director Lindy Casebier. “Her focus on landscape, both as a part of the American identity and as a driver of her own work, really stood out.”

“The local artists competing for the Hadley Prize continue to impress us with their originality and passion,” said Susan Barry, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Louisville. “While this award focuses on a single artist and a single project, it has the potential to make a much greater impact. By helping Adrienne develop professionally to realize her full potential, she will be empowered to share her gifts with other artists and the Louisville community.”
