This was a project centered around the idea of metamorphosis. Waking up from cocoons and actualizing into a butterfly. The children had a template of a butterfly and cut the remaining decorative paper into designs to accentuate their wings and beauty.
Ephemeral and delicate flowers made from tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Each child followed step-by-step instructions to create these large magnolia inspired colorful flowers. Each flower then was accompanied by a friendly bug that each child drew, cut and pasted.

Painting and Glazing at Bellewood
Instructor Lisa has been working with children in the outdoor classroom at Uspiritus' Bellewood Home for Children, painting and drawing for an upcoming mural. They also glazed clay for another fun project that is beginning to come together...

Novak Center Grand Opening
Fourth and fifth graders from our 2017-18 CFAC program shared their talents and experience with guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Novak Center for Children's Health. Art created by CFAC students will be on display in the exam rooms at the Novak Center.
St. Joseph's Children's Art
Warm weather took students from St. Joseph’s Children’s Home outside during their most recent art workshops with teaching artist Janet Britt. The young artists explored the grounds, observed nature, and hung their delightful bird sculptures in a whimsical installation for all to enjoy!
LVA’s Open Doors program brings meaningful art experiences to students at state agency schools throughout the county. Thanks to the Cralle Foundation and Fund for the Arts for their continued support of these valuable programs!
Russell Neighborhood Springfest
Despite this morning’s rain, today turned into a beautiful day for the Russell Neighborhood Springfest!
We were excited to talk with neighbors and gather community input to inspire our new murals on Muhammad Ali Blvd!
Even Mayor Fischer stopped by to enjoy the fun!

California Community Center Mural: Even More Progress!
The warm spring weather has reinvigorated our mural painting at the California Community Center! Friends and family joined us on Saturday to help paint accents and trim and we're making steady progress! Thanks to our friends at Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation, Fund for the Arts, and all the folks from the neighborhood who have stopped by with encouraging words!
California Community Center: May 2018 Update
Some of LVA's finest employees and friends - Outreach Programs Manager Ehren Reed, teacher Janet Britt and artist Victor Sweatt - have been working hard all spring on giving the nearby California Community Center a fresh coat of love (in mural form!). Special thanks to our partners at Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation, and to the Fund for the Arts and the Center for Neighborhoods for their generous support on this project.
Printmaking All Over
The kids at the Bellewood Home for Children have really loved printmaking! Instructor and ceramic artist Lisa Simon says they have done some wonderful monoprints and callographs and group printing. Her photos here show the kids doing group printmaking. They discovered that they also like to print on themselves!

Frayser 5x5 Mask-Making Project
Third-grade students at Frayser Elementary enjoyed a mask-making project.
Students read and discussed When Turtle Grew Feathers, a Choctaw Native American version of The Tortoise and the Hare. We then used CelluClay, a papier-mache goopy substance, to make the base of their masks.
Basing our mask characters on North American animals in the Southeast U.S., we then designed our masks on paper and wrote a short statement about why they chose that animal.
Then, to the painting and enhancement of the masks…
We used paints, yarns, cut paper, raffia and feathers to add character, interest ferociousness, silliness and accuracy to our painted mask forms.
Voila! The masks were sent home to live on the walls of the students’ homes.
Rangeland Mural
"Better Starts Now" is what the students from Rangeland Elementary hear over the loudspeaker frequently - words of wisdom from their principal, Dr. Kiggins. So when it came time to brainstorm about their mural project, the 4th and 5th- grade Rangeland Lions decided to play with the words "Stars and Starts" and roared into action.
With direction from their fearless teacher, Taylor Uttley, and LVA educator Annette Cable, the students drew big lions, little lions, caring lions and brave lions lying under a blue sky-filled with stars.
Withe all the snow days, our 8-week project turned into a 12-week project, but with brushes and house paints in hand, the artists painted and helped each other finish their mural with tons of PRIDE!
Neighborhood House STEAM Lab Gets Powered!
When Google Fiber wanted to help the Neighborhood House create their STEAM Lab, Louisville Visual Art was invited to help local youth design and execute a mural to look over it! Today everything was completed and ready to be enjoyed, so neighbors and media members came to celebrate.
We're so thrilled with how great it all came together and say thanks to Google Fiber for their generous support, and to the Neighborhood House for being such a wonderful community center that is giving our neighbor kids so many ways to get involved, learn and have fun!

Chenoweth Water Tower: Form and Function
Students at Chenoweth Elementary used cardboard construction techniques and teamwork to create their Water Tower projects in the "Water Tower: Form and Function" project sponsored and produced by the Louisville Water Foundation, the Fund for the Arts and Louisville Visual Art.
Each session included a history and science lesson from Louisville Water, a brief architectural lesson about the Water Tower, a student collaborative water tower drawing plan, much construction and artistic expression, a field trip to the Water Works Museum and Crescent Hill Reservoir and a Family Fun Day at the Water Tower. The project has been packed full of fun, artistic and educational opportunities and local history.
Self-Portraits Inspired by Chuck Close
Open Doors instructor Katy showed high school students at JCPS Uspiritus-Brooklawn School various examples of Chuck Close’s paintings from his career. They had learned how to mix colors and different ways to use their brushes. They drew self-portraits, as they saw themselves, and were to make grids of approximately two-inch squares. They applied bright colors of their choice and utilized said technical skills they have learned. They used acrylic paint and graphite on 22x30 inch paper. They were allowed freedom to deviate if they chose.

Price Water Towers
Fourth graders at Price Elementary are collaborating in small groups to design and construct their own unique Water Towers. This is the first day of construction - recycled materials, art supplies, a lot of imagination, and trial and error make for a fun and different learning experience.
The project is sponsored by the Water Co. Foundation and the Fund for the Arts. The project also includes a field trip to the Water Works Museum and a Family Fun Day event at the Water Tower.

Beeutiful art! Shared by the Bellewood School, our collaborators with Arts for Kosair Kids® in partnership with the Fund for the Arts. They say, "This is one kiddo’s hand art (a project taught to us by LVA). Students picked 4-5 words to describe themselves and although the projects aren’t quite finished- we already know the artists are 'beeutiful' 🐝🐝🐝"

LVA joined Mayor Greg Fischer, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith, Metro Public Art Administrator Sarah Lindgren, Metro Parks and a large crowd of friends and supporters at Metro Hall on Monday, January 29.
LVA coordinates exhibitions of local artists at Metro Hall, so on this night all gathered to pay tribute to artists CJ Pressma, Jenny Zeller, and Mitch Eckert. Also saluted were the participants of our summer program Picture Love, a partnership between LVA and Metro Parks that returns this summer!
Kerrick mural
Another mural is beginning to go up, this one at Kerrick Elementary School! We'll be posting updates as the kids keep working to complete this magical project.
