Jacob Heustis' “Beasts Will Be Still There” opens September 20 at John Brooks' Quappi Projects space. Opened by artist John Brooks in 2017, Quappi Projects is a Louisville-based art gallery featuring contemporary artists whose works are reflective of the zeitgeist. “Because we believe the highest function of art is to allow human beings to know ourselves more deeply, we are interested in exhibiting challenging, even discomforting, work as a way to explore and understand the mysteries of the human experience.”

Jacob Heustis uses painting, drawing, and installation to question and explore value and class systems, vanity and desire and the nature of art and aesthetics within the context of contemporary society. Heustis’ large-scale works consist of a minimal but expressive application of medium and materials often combined with self-referential phrases and appropriated pop-culture lexicon in the form of hand written text.

Since 2004 he has exhibited at Swanson Contemporary, the Green Building Gallery, Land of Tomorrow, Zephyr Gallery, Actor’s Theatre, Brown Theatre, Kentucky School of Art, Hite Art Institute, The Speed Art Museum, Cressman Center for Visual Arts, Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, and 21C Bentonville, Durham, and Cincinnati.

Peter Morrin was the Director of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships at UofL from 2010 until his retirement in 2016. Mr. Morrin also taught in the Department of Fine Arts, especially in courses serving the Critical and Curatorial Studies track in the Master’s Degree program, and before that he was the Director of the J.B. Speed Museum. He is now co-founder with John Begley of Afloat.

On September 22nd, join AFLOAT on the Belle of Louisville for a cruise with a variety of scholars, artists and performers who can tell about every aspect of Ohio River life and natural history. Whitney and Waller Austin were on the show this week talking about the upcoming WhitneyStrong Foundation event and how making art can play a role in addressing gun violence. Waller Austin is an interdisciplinary artist who relies heavily on humor to engage viewers with a myriad of subversive themes, juxtaposing the authentic with the apocryphal. The reactionary nature of his work has compelled him to explore concepts of originality and memisis, post-colonial colloquialisms, and mythologized identities of self and the other.

Austin studied painting and art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a Master of Fine Art degree from Sam Fox School of Art and Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. Austin currently lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife, Whitney and their two children, where he is an adjunct art instructor at Jefferson Community and Technical College.

Austin had prepared a silly art exhibition to open at the Tim Faulkner Gallery on September 21st, but after his wife survived being shot 12 times as she walked into work in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 6th, Waller was moved to create a much different installation in response to the incident.

Whitney Austin is a Louisville native who studied Entrepreneurship and Psychology at the University of Louisville. With her husband Waller she is the founder of Whitney/Strong

In celebration of our efforts, we are excited to announce our largest event yet, A Night for Life. Flame Run Gallery has co-ordinated an exhibit of works by some of the many assistants of Stephen Powell. Flame Run Director Brook F. Brook Forrest White, Jr. is a glass artist and the Director of Flame Run Glass Studio at 815 West Market Street.

A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, Brook grew up playing baseball, soccer and the drums. He was captain of his high school soccer team and went to Centre College in Danville, Kentucky to continue playing soccer at the collegiate level, where he was a four-year letterman.

Brook was pursuing a government degree when he had to take an art class to fulfill a general requirement at Centre College. That class was Hot Glass I and was taught by internationally renowned glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell. In the glassblowing studio, Brook found an outlet for his passion, intensity, athleticism and creativity.

Brook went on to work many years for Powell. Those apprenticeship years would prove to be invaluable to Brook as he continued his fascination with hot glass. Brook credits his nearly decade of time spent with Powell as the inspiration he needed to start his own studio.

Remy Sisk from Acting Against Cancer and Jordan Clark from CirqueLouis will be with us to talk about the upcoming collaborative production of PIPPIN that opens at Art Sanctuary on August 23, and cast member Myranda Thomas will be singing a song (or two). Remy Sisk is a Louisville native and has been active in the local theatre community for the last six years. He currently serves as executive director for Acting Against Cancer, and favorite previous credits with AAC, CenterStage, Pandora Productions, Theatre [502] and The Liminal Playhouse. In addition to regularly directing AAC’s annual production of The Rocky Horror Show, he recently directed AAC’s productions of [title of show] and The Last Five Years and choreographed Mamma Mia!. Remy holds a B.A. in English from Indiana University and, when not directing or performing, works in community relations at Churchill Downs Incorporated.

Jordan Clark, born in Louisville, Kentucky. He has been performing with CirqueLouis for several years and has directed their recent productions Gravity’s Varieties and Happy Birthday! After training on his own in high school, Jordan began his formal circus training in 2006 at the National Circus School of Montreal’s summer program. He was later accepted into the school’s prestigious college program where he completed his training in 2012. Jordan has performed his hand-balancing act in over 20 counties as well as at sea.

Myranda Thomas (Leading Player): Myranda is a recent graduate from the University of Kentucky, where she earned two degrees in theatre and elementary education. She currently works at StageOne Family Theatre as an education associate as well as at Acting Against Cancer as a teaching artist for their after school children’s program. Her favorite roles include Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey), Sense and Sensibility (Elinor Dashwood) and Alice in Wonderland (Caterpillar/White Queen).

Founded in 2017, the Midwest Queer Comedy Festival is dedicated to highlighting diverse talent, and showcasing that talent to Midwestern comedy fans. A secondary mission of the festival is to bring about awareness of a deserving local charity.

The Festival will be held Aug 21-25 in multiple venues around Louisville, KY: Comedy Caravan, The Bard’s Town, Kaiju, Aloft Louisville, and PLAY

Sabra Crockett is a painter. She was a recipient of a Great Meadows Foundation Professional Development Grant, and was in SALON International, in New York City in 2017. She is a muralist and scene painter, having worked at Actors Theatre of Louisville, and she is a member of Art Sanctuary.

Her mentee is Cheyenne Elder, a sophomore at DuPont Manual High School

Suzi Zimmerer: Not many of us are old enough to recall the name of Marian Etz, the actress and singer who, hailed for her exotic looks, played the boards of Eastern Europe in the 1930’s. Unfortunately for us, very few notices, programs, or photos survive. Marian is celebrated here in four of her most loved performances.

Please also enjoy four drawings made from the Museum of Imaginary Ethnography.

Juli Edberg: I am attracted to the peculiar, the geometric, the humorous, and words. The shape idea comes first. Then I create inkjet-printed paper that looks wonderful when cut up and glued onto cardboard tiles. Then these tiles are tied together. A sculpture is formed. Like a PUZZLE! Graphic design and fashion design are combined. My airiness becomes solid.

Nancy Currier: My past year’s adventure in art started with one happy little family of pieces who got wanderlust and began to roam about. They ventured into foreign territories and saw exciting new things - in color, in size, in material. “We like these,” they said. And decided to bring it all home with them. There the newcomers quickly settled in and became part of the family until, weeks later, they too got wanderlust and set off. It became a repeating cycle, and that’s how the happy little family kept growing. You can meet them.

Keith Kleespies: The expressionist power of East European puppet films has long intrigued and inspired me. Back in the days when there was film, I made numerous live action and animated puppet films and thought it was time to return to them. As there is no film to shoot now, I am presenting the work as an installation. The narrative is based loosely on the life of the Polish artist, Andrzej Kuhn [1929-2014].

Hawk Alfredson was born in Örebro, Sweden in 1960. He moved to New York City in 1995, where he for many years lived and painted in the fabled Chelsea Hotel. In 2006, Art & Antiques Magazine proclaimed Mr. Alfredson as "one of the most collectible of the European Contemporary Surrealists of the new Century".

Alfredson’s prestigious list of exhibits includes The Katonah Museum (in a group show curated by Thelma Golden of The Whitney Museum), Japan's Prefectoral Museum in Tokyo, New York's Alternative Museum, Australia's Regional Art Museum in Orange, NSW, and the historic Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, Sweden. Gallery exhibitions can be counted in the hundreds and include the destinations Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boca Raton, Boston and Baltimore along with his frequent showings throughout New York City.

Mia Hanson Studied film theory and photography in San Francisco’s Bay Area before leaving to pursue a photographic mentorship with influential photographer/ videographer Matt Mahurin in NYC in the 90’s.She has lived in Stockholm but returned to the states with her partner, painter Hawk Alfredson to live for several years in the fabled Chelsea Hotel in NYC. While in residence there she, “Created portraits utilizing the light and charged energy of the hotel atmosphere while careful not to disturb or “document “ what is not entirely capable of being captured. The ghosts are best left alone.”

Hanson will be exhibiting at The Portland Museum in October as part of the 2019 Louisville Photo Biennial.

Naveen Chaubal is the recipient of the 2019 Hadley Prize for Visual Art. he will join us, along with his producing partner Bryn Silverman, to talk about their film "Pinball". Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com to hear artists talk about their work on LVA's Artebella On The Radio.

Pinball is a feature-length documentary and fictional narrative hybrid about a teenage Iraqi immigrant figuring out his life as he straddles the two worlds and cultures he embodies—the world from which he emigrated and his current life in Louisville.

The Hadley Prize will allow Chaubal and Silverman to travel to Egypt with the local teenager featured in Pinball, where they will document the teen’s first return visit to the place he identified as home before coming to America 10 years ago.

Naveen Chaubal began making films while on a dramatic childhood family vacation amongst a forest in Michigan. Since then, he attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts and received the Thomas Bush Scholarship in Cinematography. Soon after graduating, he co-produced and co-shot “Tomorrow We Disappear,” a feature documentary about a displaced colony of traditional artists in India which premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. He has worked for Mic.com, Vice News, Bon Appétit and produced music videos for James Blake and Frank Ocean. He has traveled the world directing and producing advertisements in the Middle East, Europe, and Central America. In 2012, Naveen went through Film Independent's Project Involve program. In 2015, he filmed a short documentary with Eric Garner’s family as they dealt with the aftermath of a senseless tragedy for AJ+. His recent short film "Pinball" screened at a Director's Guild showcase in Los Angeles, Syndicated Theater in Brooklyn, TIDE Festival, the Speed Art Museum, and the Kansas City Film Fest. "Pinball" the feature project, produced by Bryn Silverman, is a hybrid documentary fiction film and will paint a portrait of immigrant suburbia with Louisville as a lush backdrop.

Bryn Silverman is an Oregon born Louisville based filmmaker whose work focuses on portraiture and people in both documentary and narrative film. She believes in entrepreneurship and seeing the world. She is a shorts screener for the Tribeca Film Festival. Most recently, she worked as a story-producer for a new Netflix series that will air in 2020.

Keith Waits returns after 2 weeks off to host three of the seven playwrights featured in the 2nd Derby City Playwrights New Play Festival July 12-28 at The Bard's Town. David Clark, Liz Fentress & Vidalia Unwin were in the studio at WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com on July 11.

David Clark co-founded Derby City Playwrights with playwright Brian Walker. His play Shrodinger’s Girl was part of the first Derby City Playwights New Play Festval in 2016. His work has been produced in Louisville in The Ten-Tucky Festival & the Finnigan & the 2012 Minnesota Fringe Festival. He has been published in two volumes of collected monologues, presented at the Last Frontier Conference Play Lab, and been selected as a semi-finalist for the Roots of the Bluegrass New Play Award, the Source Theatre Festival and as a finalist for the Heidemann Award at ATL.

Liz Fentress is playwright, director, and actor. In Louisville, she acts for Stage One, and has been a teaching artist for ATL’s New Voices program for ten years. She conducts playwriting workshops for the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Continuing Studies and wrote the department’s Online Playwriting Workshop. She is the Kentucky Regional Rep for the Dramatists Guild of America.

Liz’s plays have been produced locally at the Public Theatre of Kentucky in Bowling Green, Bunbury Theatre & The Bard’s Town Theatre in Louisville. Her play The Honey Harvest, which premiered at Kentucky Repertory Theatre, won the North American Actors Association Playwriting Competition and was staged in London's West End. Kentucky Educational Television’s production of Liz's Circus Story, a solo play which Liz wrote and performs, won the National Educational Television Association award for Best Dramatic Narrative.

Vidalia Unwin studied creative writing at the University of Louisville and has failed repeatedly to write the Great American Novel, ultimately giving up and deciding to write it as a play instead. Her other full-length work includes “The Ballad of Night Moose” (with Lex Mitchell), “@con”, and “Broken Iris”.
