Pyro Gallery Show dates: August 1 - September 7, 2019

Suzi Zimmerer:  Not many of us are old enough to recall the name of Marian Etz, the actress and singer who, hailed for her exotic looks, played the boards of Eastern Europe in the 1930’s. Unfortunately for us, very few notices, programs, or photos survive. Marian is celebrated here in four of her most loved performances.

Please also enjoy four drawings made from the Museum of Imaginary Ethnography.

Juli Edberg: I am attracted to the peculiar, the geometric, the humorous, and words. The shape idea comes first. Then I create inkjet-printed paper that looks wonderful when cut up and glued onto cardboard tiles. Then these tiles are tied together.  A sculpture is formed. Like a PUZZLE! Graphic design and fashion design are combined. My airiness becomes solid.

Nancy Currier:  My past year’s adventure in art started with one happy little family of pieces who got wanderlust and began to roam about. They ventured into foreign territories and saw exciting new things - in color, in size, in material. “We like these,” they said. And decided to bring it all home with them. There the newcomers quickly settled in and became part of the family until, weeks later, they too got wanderlust and set off. It became a repeating cycle, and that’s how the happy little family kept growing. You can meet them.

Keith Kleespies: The expressionist power of East European puppet films has long intrigued and inspired me. Back in the days when there was film, I made numerous live action and animated puppet films and thought it was time to return to them. As there is no film to shoot now, I am presenting the work as an installation. The narrative is based loosely on the life of the Polish artist, Andrzej Kuhn [1929-2014].

Corie Neumayer is a painter “who creates abstracted paintings of the landscape that focus on open spaces; deserts, mountains, lakes, as well as the countryside of Kentucky and Indiana. My work is done in a variety of untraditional and traditional media. My current work reflects the changes in our climate and the effect on our earth.”

As an educator, Neumayer helped create and develop the Visual Art Magnet program at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville and was a teacher in that program 1986-2004. Neumayer has been a member of PYRO Gallery since 2005.  Corienuemayerpaints.com

LVA's Artebella On The Radio November 29, 2018

PYRO Galley is 15 Years Old, and members of the artist's co-op Bette Levy and C.J. Pressma were with bus November 29 to talk about the anniversary exhibit opening in December. Tune in LVA's Artebella On The Radio on WXOX 97.1 FM or stream it on Artxfm.com each Thursday 10-11am.

C.J. Pressma is primarily a digital printmaker as well as a textile artist. He is a
founding member of PYRO. In 1970 he founded the Center for Photographic Studies – an alternative school of creative photography. In 1978 he was awarded a National
Endowment Fellowship in Photography. In 2001 he was one of 84 artists selected by the Brooklyn Museum of Art for its landmark exhibition: Digital Printmaking Now.

Bette Levy is a founding member of LAFTA (Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists), a past member of Fiber Forum, an arm of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, a past vice president, board member and Kentucky state representative for the Surface Design Association, and a member of numerous other textile, arts, and community organizations. She has written articles for Surface Design Journal, Arts Across Kentucky, and other professional journals.

PYRO Gallery was founded in 2003 by CJ Pressma, Marilyn Whitesell, Debra Clem, Erin Devine, Susan Gorsen, Michael Brohm, David Modica, Cean Peevey-Rosenthal, Mitch Eckert, Keith Auerbach, and the late Susan Moffett, who was very excited about what said this about PYRO’s future: “Potential in that, this "Butcher Block" area will be a destination once all the development is complete - Butchertown is blooming! And possibilities in that having several smaller galleries will allow us to have more exhibits up by different people, perhaps some guests of PYRO. Not to mention some fun and challenging installation/performance artwork.”
